Return to work with a new employer

When going back to the pre-injury employer isn't possible, we help the worker find a realistic new job goal and secure work that fits their skills and capacity.

What’s included

Each step is agreed with the worker and approved by the insurer.

  • Vocational assessment

We look at the worker’s skills, experience, interests, education and current capacity to identify job goals that are realistic and sustainable.

  • Labour market research

We check that the identified roles exist in the worker’s area, what they pay and what employers are looking for.

  • Job goal and return to work plan

An agreed plan with clear goals, activities and timeframes, shared with the insurer and treating doctor.

  • Training and upskilling

Short courses, licences or qualifications that close the gap to the new job goal, including applications through SIRA’s training program where eligible.

  • Job seeking support

Resumes, cover letters, applications, interview practice and help approaching employers directly.

  • Placement and post-placement support

Support through the first weeks in the new role, with the new employer and the worker, so the placement holds.

SIRA-funded programs we can access

NSW has programs that make it easier for new employers to take on a worker recovering from injury. We identify the ones that fit and prepare the applications.

  • Work trials
  • JobCover placement program
  • Training program
  • Transition to work
  • Equipment and workplace modification

Eligibility and approval are determined under SIRA guidelines and by the insurer.

Questions about this service

When does a case move to new employer services?

Only after the options with the pre-injury employer have been fully explored, including other roles and sites, and the insurer agrees the goal should change.

Does the worker have a say in the new job goal?

Yes. Job goals are built with the worker, based on their skills, interests and capacity, and the plan is agreed before any activity starts.

Do you help with resumes and interviews?

Yes. Practical job seeking support is a core part of the service, from resumes and applications to interview practice and approaching employers.
