Recover at work with the pre-injury employer

Most injured workers can recover while staying at work. We help employers offer the right duties, help workers build back safely, and keep everyone on the same plan.

What’s included

Services are tailored to each case and approved by the insurer before they start.

  • Initial rehabilitation assessment

We meet the worker and employer, review medical information and identify what is helping or getting in the way of recovery at work.

  • Workplace assessment

An on-site review of the job, the environment and the equipment, so duties match both the work and the medical restrictions.

  • Job demands and task analysis

A clear breakdown of the physical and cognitive demands of the role, shared with the treating doctor to support capacity decisions.

  • Suitable duties and recover at work plans

Practical, written plans that set out duties, hours, restrictions and review dates in language everyone can follow.

  • Equipment and workplace modifications

Recommendations for equipment or changes to the workplace that help the worker do their job safely, including applications for SIRA-funded support where eligible.

  • Upgrading and monitoring

Regular check-ins on site and by phone, with duties and hours upgraded in step with medical advice until the worker is back to pre-injury capacity.

  • Case conferences

We coordinate discussions with the treating doctor, employer and insurer when a decision needs everyone in the same room.

Built around the real job

Plans written at a desk often fall apart on the floor. We plan duties where the work actually happens.

Our consultants visit the workplace, talk with supervisors and watch the tasks being done. That means suitable duties that are genuinely productive for the employer, safe for the worker, and realistic to sustain.

When to refer

Earlier is better. Consider a referral when:

  • The worker has been off work for more than a few days

Or is likely to be, based on the injury or medical certificate.

  • Suitable duties are hard to identify

The employer wants help finding duties that fit the restrictions.

  • Progress has stalled

Hours or duties haven’t moved, or the return has broken down.

  • There are workplace or psychosocial barriers

Conflict, low confidence or communication issues are slowing recovery.

Questions about this service

Does the employer pay for this?

No. Approved workplace rehabilitation services are funded by the workers compensation insurer as part of the claim.

What if the employer can't offer suitable duties?

We work with the employer to look across the whole business, including other roles, teams and sites. If there are genuinely no suitable duties, we discuss next steps with the insurer, which may include support to return to work with a new employer.

How long does it take?

It depends on the injury, the medical advice and the job. We set review dates in every plan and report progress to the insurer throughout, so the timeline is always visible.
